ONION 2 CICADA 3301 2014  Short (256 bytes) growing string)

At the end of Part 1, linked to above, we had a single resource:

cu343l33nqaekrnw.onion
A7kfqA2

This site will be refererd to as onion 2 in wikia.

To open the url as it is, download the Tor Browser Bundle . If this is not an option to you, you can visit the pages through the .onion.to or the .tor2web.org pages. This does not require the Tor Browser Bundle, however, you give up some anonymity doing this.

As of 04:00 GMT 11.1.2014, http://cu343l33nqaekrnw.onion/ is not accesible anymore.

Upon visiting the address, the following document was displayed, the string it contained grew gradually:

<!--Patience is a virtue-->

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

Note the HTML comment that reads "Patience is a virtue". This soon became evident. We also noticed that every few minutes, another 2 characters, or 1 byte in hex representation, were appended to the end of that string.

This process continued for approximately 23 hours. The intervals between new bytes were found to be seemingly random multiples of five. A sample of the data collected:

After 23 hours, the process stopped and no more characters/bytes were appended to the string. The final string was:

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

The total amount of characters is 512. Separated into groups of 4, with 10 columns, the data becomes:

One of us noticed that if you interpret this data as a monochromatic bitmap, some interesting images can be obtained. When you asume that the bitmap is 25 pixels wide, the result is:

http://postimg.org/image/yukab2cjx/

Using different widths, one obtains these:

ONION 2 LONG STRING <!---761---> with 3 jpgs

However at 05:31:40 GMT -- about an hour after the string was complete -- the document changed. The old 512-character code was gone, along with the HTML comment. In its place:

The full source is quite large. It is archived at:

https://infotomb.com/oyfhl.txt

String as a PDF file:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8agGVBzeYO6OHR5bktUYmpjZWc/edit?usp=sharing

Note that the HTML comment was changed from

<!--Patience is a virtue-->

to

<!--761-->

Taking the sum of the phrase "Patience is a virtue" using the Gematria Primus results in the number 761.

The new string was 3641299 characters long. It contained a significant amounts of repeated text.

Lenght of full html: 378FDE = 3641310 bytes

Lenght of string:  378FD2 = 3641298 bytes

761 is a prime, and was used in Cicada 2013 as the file name of a clue in the form of an mp3 -- "The Instar Emergence".

761 is also a palindromic prime EMIRP -- 167, its reverse, is a prime number as well.

DECODING STRING

Analsysis of this new string revealed that it contained three JPEG image files. To obtain them, we:

1.   Converted the string into its binary representation
2.   Every byte of string has to be XORed with 0xFF (11111111); we can achieve same efect if we invert every bit (1 beocmes 0 and 0 becomes 1)0x00 0x27 | 0x00 -> 0xFF
  0x00     0x27         |                          0x00 -> 0xFF
00000000 00100111 XOR   | OR just reverse bits   00000000 -> 1111111
11111111 11111111  =    |
11111111 11011000       |                          0x27   ->  0xD8
  0xFF     0xD8         |                        00100111 -> 11011000

3.   Discovered the byte sequence that indicates the beginning of a JPG image (0xFF 0xD8)

4.   A quick look at Wikipedia's JPEG article tells us how every jpg file begins:
  • bytes 0xFF, 0xD8 indicate start of image
  • bytes 0xFF, 0xD9 indicate end of image

5.   Discovered this sequence again, marking the beginning of a second JPG and the end of the first.

6.    Discovered this sequence at the end of the string. This meant that the third image had its order reversed (i.e. instead of 0xFF 0xD8 being located at the beginning of the image, it was found at the end, and in reverse order like the rest of that image)

For example, the first two bytes of the original string were:

0x00 -> 0x27      00000000 -> 1111111

When you apply XOR with 0xFF, those bits become

0xFF -> 0xD8      00100111 -> 11011000

Which is the beginning of a JPG file.

The offsets of jpgs from beginning of the string.

  • 00000000: First Image ("Liber Primus")
  • 000293AC: Second Image ("Rune Warning Message")
  • 00191BB2: Third Image (in reverse order) ("Chapter 1: Intus")

To make files on *nix systems:

dd if=onionout.jpg bs=1 skip=$((0x00293ac)) > cu343l33nqaekrnw.onion.6.jpg

Commands for splitting the onionout.jpg into three files (offsets converted to decimal). Here the onion file is called onioninvert.bin after inversion (xor with 0xff):

dd if=onioninvert.bin of=onion1.jpg bs=1 skip=0 count=168876
dd if=onioninvert.bin of=onion2.jpg bs=1 skip=168876 count=1476614
dd if=onioninvert.bin of=onion3rev.jpg bs=1 skip=1645490 count=175159

Note that the 3rd file is reversed. Write a program to print out all the bytes in the reverse order to create the third jpg.

Here are the three images:

Journey Into Jung's Red Book: Liber Primus
by Jules Okapi, J.C. Andrijeski (Goodreads Author)

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9734908-journey-into-jung-s-red-book

Jung was referenced in Warning Pastebin from 2013: http://pastebin.com/dHJ6JNkr

Beliefs:
• teach followers to "Find a death every day." It doesn’t mean literal death. Instead there is a double meaning: 1) know you're going to die, so, nothing matters, and 2) Find the death of the “I” or the ego.
• other philosophy they use is "what you resist persists" by Jung, and the Jesuit corollary "create what you fear most." For example, if you are afraid of resistance and rebellion, then send operators to create resistance and rebellion. This way, you can direct the energy of the people, embrace it, let it dwindle, and at the same time minimize the damage.

Soulseekah coded an analog of the 'Count' function available at

RUNES SOLVED

1. Stack the Gematria Primus, left column onto the right one. 2. Find rune position in the list (for example, first rune R is position 5) 3. Count the same position backwards (5 from bottom gets you A).  This is basically the rune equivalent of the Atbash cipher which is "has been associated with the esoteric methodologies of Jewish mysticism's interpretations of Hebrew religious texts as in the Kabbalah."  It is also noteworthy that Gematria is associated with Kabbalah as well.

Good luck.

XORing all three SIGNED Outguess outputs from 3 jpgs produced that PGP signed message:

  • just outguess jpg1 xor ougutess2 xor outguress3
  • so, 1. we got 3.5 megabyte onion dump
  • converted to raw data
  • xor with fffffffffff.....
  • got 3 images
  • 1 at offset 0, 2 at offset 0x00293ac and then reveversed, and 3 at offset 0 again
  • each image had similar outguesses with 3 same-sized hexdumps
  • 991 bytes long, xor the 3 together to get https://infotomb.com/z5f6p.txt
  • simple as that

We got new stuff form the server status (cca 07:18 GMT)

SOME WISDOM:

THE PRIMES ARE SACRED

THE TOTIENT FUNCTION IS SACRED

ALL THNGS SHOULD BE ENCRYPTED

KNOW THIS:

That appears to be the first paragraph of first image.

Onion 3 v3

jpg from onion 2 server status

<soulseekah> you'll get the same image
<soulseekah> byte-for-byte
<soulseekah> there is no outguess

FINAL RESULT:

272     138     341     131     151
366     199     130     320     18
226     245     91      245     226
18      320     130     199     366
151     131     341     138     272

IF WE MARK PRIMES AS 'o' AND NON-PRIMES AS 'x', WE GET THE FOLLOWING PATTERN:

x	x	x	o	o

x	o	x	x	x

x	x	x	x	x

x	x	x	o	x

o	o	x	x	x

When resolved, it produces the following pattern:

x	x	x

x		x	x	x

x	x	x	x	x

x	x	x		x

		x	x	x

Upon dividing this in half along the center column (5 x's) and flipping a side vertically and horizontally, we see that they mirror each other.

https://infotomb.com/99694.txt This 5x5 matrix is also imbeded in between the two images found on server-status.

How we got that:

u dump hex > bin  twice to get it

converting this data to binary again

BEGINNING OF REASONABLE EXPLANATION

As far I understand long string on updated SERVER-STATUS PAGE are two images, same one one from top secon d from bottom and reversed. Just like  it was on onion 2.

But in between there was chunkg of data (we call that  OOB TABLE) . Should be in th logs bellow.

That chunk of  data is after some hex>bin magic the same as 5X5 table in second paragraph of jpg.

Ppl say that second paragraph doesnt mean anything, its only words, and i dont know.

To replace runes with numbers we can do OOB TABLE hex>bin magic, or we can simply count runes values from gematria primus.

(note this is just how i imagine it based on info i gathered, i dont have time to check if all this is true; if you know more pls fix that aritcle -Lurk)

<Lurker69> havent heard of matix at all
<soulseekah> https://infotomb.com/pw38g
<soulseekah> Seen this?
<soulseekah> I made that
<soulseekah> basically it allowed for the discover of some out of band data
<soulseekah> between the two images from the /server-status onion
<soulseekah> jpeg
<soulseekah> http://static2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140109073114/uncovering-cicada/images/6/62/Onion_3_v3.jpg
<soulseekah> this is actualy 2 images
<soulseekah> i.e. if you reverse the file you get the same image
<soulseekah> byte for byte
<soulseekah> However, if you diff the two, you'll find out of band data that's between the images
<soulseekah> https://infotomb.com/ao1wx.txt
<soulseekah> converting this data to binary again
<soulseekah> will yield a nice clean matrix
<soulseekah> https://infotomb.com/99694.txt
<soulseekah> which matches the matrix at the bottom here: http://static2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140109073114/uncovering-cicada/images/6/62/Onion_3_v3.jpg
